A full
day car and walking tour around the Lake Como: 16th
century villas, late Baroque and Neoclassical estates,
parks built and defended over the centuries, venerable
lakefront towns, Romanesque parish churches. The blend
of natural beauty and historical heritage is perfectly
balanced here; joined to the gentle climate, the "manmade"
landscape attains something close to perfection.
Itinerary - Lecco, Onno, Asso, Bellagio, Gravedona,
Còlico, Varenna, Lecco (km 183).
Halting places of interest: Lecco a nice town
on the south side of the lake, with ancient origins and
beautiful monuments, is an important tourist resort.
Along the climb from Asso to Ghisallo
is the Romanesque church of S.Alessandro, with its
handsome 12th century campanile and late 15th century
Lombard frescoes. Passo del Ghisallo, with the
little church of the Madonna del Ghisallo, splendid
views of Lake Como during the descend to Civenna.
Bellagio is well located, at the juncture of
the three basins of Lake Como; it has an old center with
narrow lanes, hotel parks, and noble villas. Torno
has two centers: one down near the marina, and another
up toward the church of S.Giovanni; the 16th century
Villa Pliniana graces the view from the far bank.
Como: in the "city of silk", exquisite relics of
the ages of the communes and of the Lombard Renaissance
stand side-by-side with notable buildings from the early
20th century. Cernobbio, practically a
residential suburb of Como, has grand villas and a fine
lakefront promenade. Ossuccio: the church of S.
Maria Maddalena, has an impressive late-gothic bell
tower. Tramezzo has the early 18th century
Villa Carlotta, with its azaleas and rhododendrons
blooming in April and May. Gravedona: fine
views of this lovely town, and the church of S. Maria
del Tiglio, a major work of Lombard Romanesque.
Còlico: follow the shore of the lacustrine gulf,
called the Lago di Piona; a short detour takes to the
Abbazia di Piona, an ancient monastery with a wonderful
13th century cloister. Corenno Plinio: this village is
clustered and perched on a lakefront crag. Bellano,
a pleasant health resort which boasts the renowned gorge
of the Pioverna stream. Varenna: with a nice
lakefront promenade and stairs leading between houses,
with fine views of the old center. Fiumelatte,
named for the river that tumbles down, from spring to
fall, white with foam.
